Soil pH is one of those gardening topics that sounds intimidating but is actually quite straightforward once you understand the basics. And for container gardeners, understanding pH can solve problems that no amount of watering or fertilizing will fix. If your plants look pale, stunted, or unproductive despite seemingly good care, pH might be the invisible culprit.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. Below 7 is acidic, above 7 is alkaline. Most plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral range, somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0. A few plants have specific preferences, blueberries need acidic soil around 4.5 to 5.5, and lavender prefers slightly alkaline conditions around 7.0 to 7.5, but the 6.0 to 7.0 range covers the vast majority of what balcony gardeners grow.

In the ground, soil pH tends to be buffered by the sheer volume of earth, organic matter, and microbial activity. Small fluctuations get absorbed. In a container, you have a tiny, isolated ecosystem with limited buffering capacity. pH can shift faster and have more dramatic effects.

Several common container gardening practices can gradually change your soil pH without you realizing it.

  • Tap water: In many municipalities, tap water is slightly alkaline (pH 7.5 to 8.5). Over weeks of watering, this can slowly push your container soil toward alkaline conditions.
  • Fertilizers: Some fertilizers are acidifying (like ammonium-based nitrogen), while others are alkalizing. Repeated application can shift pH over a growing season.
  • Peat-based potting mixes: Peat moss is naturally acidic. Fresh peat-based potting mix often starts around pH 5.5 to 6.0 before lime is added to adjust it. As the peat decomposes, it can gradually acidify.
  • Coir-based mixes: Coconut coir typically has a more neutral pH around 6.0 to 6.8 and tends to be more pH-stable over time than peat-based mixes.

How to Test Your Soil pH

Testing container soil pH is simple and inexpensive. You have several options.

  • pH test strips: The cheapest option. Mix a tablespoon of soil with distilled water, dip the strip, and compare the color. Accuracy is approximate but sufficient for most gardening purposes.
  • Liquid pH test kits: Slightly more accurate than strips. You add soil to a tube with indicator solution and compare the resulting color to a chart.
  • Digital pH meter: The most precise option. Insert the probe into moist soil and read the number. Good meters cost between 15 and 30 dollars and last for years. Worth the investment if you grow acid-loving plants like blueberries.

Adjusting pH in Containers

If Soil Is Too Acidic (pH Below 6.0)

  • Garden lime: Dolomitic lime raises pH gradually and also adds calcium and magnesium. A small amount goes a long way in containers.
  • Wood ash: A natural alkalizer. Sprinkle a thin layer on the soil surface and water it in. Use sparingly, it is quite potent.
  • Crushed oyster shells: A slow-release way to raise pH over time. Also adds calcium. Good for long-term containers.
Go slowly: When adjusting pH, make small changes and retest after a week. It is much easier to nudge pH gradually than to correct an overcorrection. In containers, small amounts of amendments have outsized effects compared to garden beds. Half the recommended amount is usually a good starting point.
