- Top-water for the first two weeks. New plantings need time to establish roots into the wicking zone. Water from the top initially, then transition to reservoir-only watering once the plant is established.
- Check the reservoir regularly. Get in the habit of checking the water level through the fill tube once or twice a week. In peak summer, large tomato plants can drain a reservoir in 2 to 3 days.
- Add liquid fertilizer to the reservoir. Dilute fertilizer mixed into the reservoir water delivers nutrients directly to the root zone with maximum efficiency. Use half-strength liquid fertilizer every other refill during the growing season.
- Flush the soil monthly. Top-water thoroughly once a month to flush any salt buildup from fertilizer. Let the excess drain from the overflow hole. This prevents mineral accumulation that can harm roots over time.
Self-watering containers are not a magic solution that eliminates all gardening effort. You still need to feed your plants, monitor for pests, and provide appropriate light. But they remove the single most stressful and time-consuming aspect of balcony gardening, the constant worry about whether your plants have enough water.
